A Fusion of Automotive Elegance and Natural Inspiration in Furniture Design | Oksys

FDT Bureau

Pininfarina, the renowned Italian design studio celebrated for its iconic sports car designs like the Ferrari F40 and Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, has ventured into a new realm with the launch of its inaugural collectible furniture piece – a striking chaise longue titled Oksys. This unique furniture item marks a significant expansion for Pininfarina, aligning with its recent foray into branded residential projects, notably the Cyrela development in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Crafted by in-house architect Marco Becucci, the Oksys chaise longue embodies the core values driving Pininfarina’s design ethos, which seeks to harmonize aesthetics with technical innovation. The design concept behind Oksys revolves around the juxtaposition of elements, blending the sleekness of modern design with the ruggedness of nature. The upper portion of the chaise longue boasts fluid, ergonomic lines reminiscent of Pininfarina’s automotive designs, while the base mimics the texture and form of a rough, untouched rock, delicately grounded.

Oksys symbolizes the integration of artificial and natural elements, challenging the perception of opposites by presenting them as complementary facets of a unified whole. According to Becucci, the chaise longue, when viewed from above, exudes a polished, aerodynamic aesthetic reminiscent of a sports car’s curves, inviting tactile exploration. However, a closer inspection reveals the raw, unrefined nature of its lower base, serving as a stark contrast to the smoothness above.

The genesis of Oksys involved a meticulous design process akin to that employed in Pininfarina’s automotive and architectural endeavors. From initial sketches to ergonomic evaluations and computer-aided modeling, every step was geared towards realizing the intricate form envisioned by the design team. A 1:1 scale prototype, crafted from polyurethane and coated with epoxy resin to achieve a metallic finish, was unveiled at Milan Design Week, signaling the culmination of this creative journey. With only three editions slated for production, Oksys embodies exclusivity and craftsmanship.
