Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024: Where Technology and Design Shape the Future of Everyday Living

FDT Bureau

Technology and design converge at the Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024, showcasing innovative systems and products aimed at enhancing everyday life. The event encapsulated the synergy between technology and design, focusing on smart objects, artificial intelligence, and cutting-edge systems. Here is a detailed report on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

In the kitchen, technology blends seamlessly with design, transforming it into a space of pleasure rather than mere functionality. This integration marks a pivotal moment, where design acts as a mediator, harnessing technology to innovate and simplify. The evolution of kitchen appliances reflects this, as they become increasingly intelligent and intuitive. The Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024 showcased the transformative power of technology and design, where innovation meets functionality to enhance our daily lives.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Smart Objects

Gone are the days when objects were merely connected; today, they are becoming smarter. The Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024 showcased a learning phase in AI, where companies utilize machine learning algorithms to collect data from user habits, laying the foundation for future advancements.  Samsung introduced the Bespoke AI system, a range of intelligent appliances equipped with cameras and AI algorithms. The Bespoke Dual Cook steam series 7 oven, for example, recognizes dishes and suggests cooking methods, while the Family Hub Plus refrigerator tracks food inventory and expiration dates. Tubes Radiatori incorporated AI into its designs, blending technology and creativity to redefine radiator aesthetics.

Technology that Simplifies

Technological advancements aim to simplify tasks and improve lives. Miele presented the Laundry Aerium, a walk-in closet that sanitizes and removes odors from clothing, while Whirlpool’s Food Sensing Probe monitors cooking processes in its WCollection oven. LG Electronics introduced LG InstaView with MoodUP, a refrigerator that changes colour and mood to match the environment or music playing. Haier’s Bionicook ovens utilize cameras to recognize foods and offer cooking recommendations.

Bora’s M Pure hob featured an integrated extraction system and a bridge function for larger cookware, while Elica’s Lhov combines a hob, oven, and extractor hood in one appliance. Caimi Brevetti's Oversized lux panel incorporates air purification technology, promoting well-being through integrated systems. Nobili Rubinetterie introduced the Sorgente tap, offering four versions with varying functions, including water filtration, heating, and carbonation, controlled via a built-in app.
