Created to repurpose cardboard, Cuna is an eco-friendly furniture line that cleverly combines sustainability with functionality. This collection, designed by Valeria Coello, transforms a common household material, cardboard, into a versatile and stylish piece of furniture, demonstrating the untapped potential of what we typically regard as waste. Instead of consigning this material to landfills, Cuna offers an ingenious alternative by repurposing it into practical furniture. The collection is crafted from just two sheets of sturdy cardboard, complemented by five additional pieces. This construction not only showcases a unique aesthetic but also provides a satisfying DIY experience, allowing users to forge a personal connection with their creation. The true brilliance of the Cuna bench lies in its simplicity and the use of joinery principles. The pieces interlock seamlessly without the need for screws or adhesives, forming a structure that is both sturdy and lightweight. This design approach highlights the ingenuity of Cuna, making it a model of efficient and sustainable furniture design. Versatility is a key feature of the Cuna bench. In its standard form, it offers a beautifully curved seating area for one person. However, flipping it upside down reveals an additional layer of cardboard, transforming it into a flat bench that can potentially seat an extra person. This dual-purpose functionality extends further, as the flat-top version can also serve as a table. With two Cuna benches, you have a complete set—comprising a low table and chairs—ideal for various settings, from hosting gatherings to everyday living. Despite being made of cardboard, Cuna provides surprising comfort. The 6-8mm thick cardboard offers a firm yet yielding surface that is gentle on the body. The curved design enhances the seating experience, with the sides serving as armrests or even as a place to set a cup or phone. When placed against a wall, the bench acts as a makeshift backrest, further increasing its utility.
