Bench Inspired by Japanese Shrine Gates | Torii Bench

FDT Bureau

Ultramar Studio’s new Torii bench, inspired by Japanese Torii gates is designed by Ewan Lamm. This sculptural bench mimics the iconic shape of Shinto shrine gates using cylindrical wooden components capped with brass discs. The bench comes in various stained finishes like brown and red, highlighting the wood grain and adding a pop of colour. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Each piece is stained with coloured linseed oil for a bold appearance, and the ends are adorned with aged brass discs, adding a refined touch. Lamm, who blends Eastern and Western cultural influences, aimed to encapsulate the spiritual allure of Torii gates, which symbolize tranquility and mystique. The Torii bench is a follow-up to Lamm’s smaller Torii stool, introduced in 2023. Available in custom wood stain colours, the bench measures 1580mm X 490mm X 500mm, making it a striking addition to any space. This bench not only functions as a piece of furniture but also as a piece of art, embodying a blend of elegance and spiritual symbolism.
