South Korean designer Jeonghwa Seo has crafted a distinctive collection of tables and benches using purpose-cast aluminium tubes, which are concealed behind frosted acrylic panels. This innovative approach defines the Cylinder series, consisting of eight unique furniture pieces that integrate rounded acrylic slabs with hollow metal tubing. The translucent nature of the acrylic panels blurs the visibility of the metal tubes, leaving only a vague outline of their form. This effect, as Seo describes, creates an intriguing interplay between shape, material, softness, and brutality. The acrylic sheets are tinted in shades such as light green, lilac, amber, and white, offering a striking contrast against the silver-grey aluminum.
On the bench, the acrylic slabs function as the seating surface, while the seven different tables use the acrylic for storage and display purposes. Seo notes that the collection emphasizes the exploration of functional structures, despite not prioritizing traditional comfort and practicality. The pieces are designed to adapt to their environment while also making a visual impact through the manipulation of light and shadow. Both the plastic and metal components were produced locally in factories based in Seoul.
