Today, technology is closely associated with furniture with upgradation in the way it is designed, manufactured and sold. 3D printing is a widespread concept where remarkable designs are created by depositing and gluing layer by layer tiny grains of material. One such example is Guto Requena’s Noize Chair which draws inspiration from the original Girafa chair. The technology transforms Noize Chair into a 3D piece with an audio file of urban noises and sounds of Sao Paulo.

Ceasing the future, Augmented Reality has also changed the way we see designs today. The technology conveniently helps us to see the location of the desired object in a real space, thereby giving a better idea of scale, colour and its impact on the ambience. Even furniture giant like IKEA has now started developing applications to test their furniture in real environments. The Internet of Things (IoT) allows users to digitally Find out how 3D Printing, IOT and AI is being used in Furniture Design interconnect everyday objects with themselves and the internet.

This has been extended to furniture as well where the furniture interacts with the internet to provide comfort, reduce repetitive tasks, remind of commitments and even protect health. One such example is Herman Miller’s Live OS initiative where the company’s Aeron chair was included in its Live OS, allowing desk and chair to communicate with each other through an app. For instance, the desk adjusts to your settings the moment you sit down or stand up.

One step ahead is artificial intelligence which enhances the ability of furniture. A concept of generative design, AI helps in developing several iterations that are established by the user, thereby enhancing its ergonomics. The first market chair created by AI is Kartell’s AI which was further developed by architect Philippe Starck.
