The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), the national body of architects in the country, with over 20,000 members has called for a complete boycott of Chinese goods & services. The press communiqué issued by Divya Kush, president, IIA, read, “We from IIA issue an advice to the members of Institute and to the entire architectural fraternity & its associates to stop using and/or specifying any goods or service of Chinese PRC (People Republic of China) with immediate effect. We should also start making efforts to replace such goods & services currently in our on-going work and encourage Indian goods to support our industry.”
The decision comes in the wake of China's military aggression along the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh. IIA is not alone in advocating the boycott of Chinese goods and services. Recently the Surat chapter of CREDAI urged its members to boycott the use of building materials imported from China. Also CAIT has called for boycott of Chinese goods, listing 450 imported items. At present, India imports about Rs 5.25 lakh crore, ie $ 70 billion, worth of goods annually from China.
A number of industry association are calling for a pragmatic approach and see to it that actions taken hurt China the most. A call for complete boycott of Chinese goods & services is one amongst many. “We at IIA are absolutely sure that our fraternity and our associates will wholeheartedly support and execute the national call to boycott Chinese goods and services,” said Kush in the communiqué.
