luxury home furnishing | Top Furniture Trends For 2020

Furniture plays an essential role in interior design. The most basic part of home interiors is the look and portability of furniture. The broad assortment of furniture from sofas, chairs, tables, cots, beds etc. define the entire look of a home. The trends in furniture design keeps on changing with time. To know the top trends of 2020, Furniture Design & Technology (FDT) in association with partner magazine SURFACES REPORTER interacted with a few architects and interior designers. Here’s what we discovered.

According to Ms. Punam Kalra, Creative Director of I’M, The Centre for Applied Arts, “2020 will be all about minimal maximalism. Curvilinear furniture with bold curves, and distinctive furniture like luxurious geometric coffee tables, and parametric, neotenic furniture inspired by organic folds, asymmetry, and bulbous forms will add a visual depth to any space with their juxtaposed multiplanar voluminous forms.

Plush furniture and experimental accessories in a combination of modern biosynthetic and recyclable materials, along with rough, organic finishing and digitally printed patterns will create an ultra-modern yet affable vibe.”

"Neotenic furniture and accessories will be more prominent in 2020. Bright, playful, organic shaped furniture and custom designs will slowly work their way into the design scene."

Architect Dipen Gada, Founder, Dipen Gada Associates, Vadodara shares that “Furniture with modulation will be the in thing in 2020.” As rightly pointed out by Architect Sumessh Menon, Founder & Principal, Sumessh Menon Associates, Mumbai, versatility has become the key word in design whether it is furniture or spatial planning. There is a big shift in material selections too wherein natural materials like cork, bamboo and reclaimed wood are being embraced more often. He says, “Neotenic furniture and accessories will be more prominent in 2020. Bright, playful, organic-shaped furniture and custom designs will slowly and surely work their way into the design scene. Custom furniture especially retro furniture is going to be a big thing.”

Now, mix-matching of furniture is in. Instead of having full seating sets, people are preferring to have a mix of furniture types, for instance a 2-seater with a couch or a metal chair. As Dutch Designer Marcel Wanders beautifully puts it, “The trend is now for furniture to not disrupt a room, drawing attention to itself. Rather, furniture is being made to blend into the concept of a room around it.”

Ms. Neelam Das, Senior Project Lead, Interior Design, Studio Lotus, Delhi feels that nowadays minimalist furnishings and soft colours are rendering spaces to be more engaging and habitable, while maximising the sense of scale of the spaces, and the trend will continue in 2020. According to yo Mr. Gobind Kapur, Director, Maison Du Luxe, now everybody is using lot of metal and going with environment friendly products. People are now using water based solutions, water based prints.
