Norwegian design studio Snohetta and lighting brand Atelje Lyktan have joined forces to introduce Superdupertube, an innovative office lamp crafted from extruded hemp and sugarcane bioplastic. This eco-friendly design serves as a modern reinterpretation of Atelje Lyktan’s iconic Supertube from the 1970s, which was originally manufactured using extruded aluminum. As per the studio, the Supertube had become somewhat forgotten since its production ceased in 2010, despite its iconic status. Recognizing its potential, the design duo set out to elevate the classic lamp to a new level while maintaining its essential functionality. The inspiration for the lamp’s material choice stemmed from a desire to minimize its carbon footprint. After experimenting with various sustainable materials, including hemp bioplastic, Snohetta and Atelje Lyktan landed on a composite comprising hemp, sugarcane-derived polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastic, wood cellulose, and minerals.
This innovative material not only reduces the lamp’s environmental impact by over 50 per cent compared to traditional aluminium variants but also offers durability and renewability. The lamp’s organic aesthetic is further enhanced by linen fabric-covered electric cables, adding to its natural appeal. The Superdupertube’s design includes twisted louvres that soften the light and minimize glare, making it an ideal luminaire for workspaces. Available in four different lengths, the lamp features an organic beige colour with a unique pattern derived from the hemp and sugarcane components.
Reportedly, the lamp’s appearance may vary slightly due to factors such as crop conditions, humidity levels and the heating process during production, giving each piece a distinctive character. In terms of sustainability, the lamp can be composted in an industrial composter or recycled into pellets for creating future lamps. However, current recycling processes require owners to return the lamps to the producer due to material limitations.
