Garbage Kids, a design collective from Georgia, recently unveiled a collection of wooden furniture and ornaments made entirely from recycled materials at Milan Design Week. Teaming up with Dropcity, a hub for architecture and design, the exhibition took place in a historic tunnel near Milan Central Station, alongside works by other collaborators. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
The collection embodies the ethos of longevity, aiming to create pieces with enduring character and personal connections. Using reclaimed materials like timber from demolition sites and fallen trees, Garbage Kids gather resources thoughtfully, leaving behind what they don’t need. One of the highlights is the Daybed, a reclaimed walnut bench adorned with 11,000 seed pearls, supported by hazelnut and chestnut legs. The Spiky Chair and Table, also made from reclaimed wood, feature legs covered in hazelnut spikes coated with beeswax and ash.
Garbage Kids emphasizes traditional carpentry, crafting each piece by hand with a slow, deliberate approach, contrasting with modern mass production. The Walnut Crocodile chairs, with three-legged tapered seats treated with linseed oil, add a playful touch to the collection. Visitors could also enjoy handcrafted wooden board games like The Royal Game of Ur and Backgammon throughout the exhibition.
