This Versatile Furniture takes New Shape on How its Rotated

FDT Bureau

Swiss studio Kosmos Architects recently introduced Dice, a versatile piece of oak furniture that serves as a stool, coffee table, lamp or footrest. The studio’s Dice collection debuted at Milan Design Week in Fake/Authentic Gallery, exploring the future of furniture design. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Weighing 10.5kg, Dice featured a warm oak wood frame with subtle chequerboard patterns. Named after the numbered cube used in games of chance, Dice transforms based on how it’s rotated. Two wide legs support it, while two are slimmer and rounded. The fifth leg has a triangular lamp at its tip, made of plastic and frosted glass, which can be removed and charged via USB. Dice functions as a stool, coffee table or footrest when tipped. It can also be hung from the ceiling for lighting or used as a floor lamp.

The asymmetrical design merges four different furniture types. The removable lamp eliminates cords, enhancing the furniture’s independence. CNC-milled from a stack of solid oak pieces, Dice combined new technology with handcraft. It’s sanded and oiled manually for a smooth finish. The furniture is both purposeful and open to interpretation, serving as both a sculpture and a pragmatic piece.
