Designer Recycles Plastic Water Bottle Caps to Design Modular Outdoor Furniture

FDT Bureau

Designed by industrial designer Binsar Priandika, the Base Plastic project offers a range of outdoor products that can withstand years of use. The project aims to create public furniture by using recycled plastic waste which is durable. Know more about the project on Furniture Design and Technology (FDT).

Crafted in hexagonal units that fit together to achieve a cluster of seats and/ or planters, Base Plastic comprises of components that are achieved using plastic water bottle caps. The raw material (read plastic bottle caps) used enables the furniture pieces to easily withstand exposure to the elements, thereby eliminating post-consumer waste from the landfill. Additionally, the naturally resilient form of the material also makes it well-suited for high-traffic pedestrian spaces.

The design is 2-in-1 as it functions as a planter as well as a bench. The three available modules can be arranged depending on the needs of a community. Each set that comprises a base, middle and cover, weighs 17 kg, and is made out of 17,000 plastic bottle caps. However, the modular system of Base Plastic allows more pieces to be added and configured in different shapes.

Sturdy and customizable, Base Plastic is available in white, black and blue hues. However, the pieces can be further painted in different colours as well. While the blue base weighs 7.7 kg, the middle portion weighs 4.3 kg. The cover weighs nearly 5 kg of high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
