This Plastic Repurposed Chair Relaxes Users by Gathering Surrounding Sounds

FDT Bureau

The Amplification of The Senses Chair, located along the banks of the Han River in Seoul, boasts a unique design that mimics cupping your hands around your ears for better hearing. Created as a haven for citizens seeking reflection, relaxation and tranquility, this chair gathers the sounds of the river and directs them towards your ears, thus offering relaxation and rejuvenation. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Designed by Eun Whan Cho, who was commissioned by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, these chairs enhance the sounds of nature amidst the pollution of the city. “We used this bench to amplify the scenery and sound of the Han River and allow users to meditate,” adds Cho. The chair’s megaphone-shaped backrest not only amplifies your sense of hearing but also obstructs peripheral vision, allowing for heightened focus on the present moment and the ability to drown out distracting thoughts and emotions.

The chair's ingenious design elevates sitting to a heightened sensory experience, drawing your attention to the serenity of nature. With the Amplification of The Senses Chair, you are enveloped by the sights, sounds and scents of nature - the gentle rippling of water, the melodious chirping of birds, and the soothing rustle of tree branches in the wind. It enhances your focus and reduces stress, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the tranquility of the environment.

The chair's commitment to nature is twofold. Not only does it provide a physical connection to nature but it is also crafted entirely from recycled plastic waste. Waste from Seoul is meticulously collected, cleaned and pulverized into tiny colourful chips of plastic, which are then bound with resin and moulded into large pieces. Once the resin sets, these pieces are assembled to form the Amplification of The Senses Chair. This innovative construction process not only repurposes plastic that would otherwise end up in landfills or as environmental pollution, but it also symbolizes a cleansing effect.
