Architects Avraham Cohen, Yuval Berger, Alon Nisan, Yoav Dabas and Disrupt.Design Lab (D.DLAB) director Shany Barath have initiated the WoodenWood project, which explores the potential of design to address wood waste in circular solutions. The project combines traditional woodworking with robotic printing to create seating elements using an all-natural wood paste made from sawdust, a material that is often discarded. Here is a detailed report on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
The process ensures minimal waste by using the raw wood structure as a mold for the printing. D.DLAB’s objective is to establish a continuous lifecycle for wood through innovative design with waste materials. The WoodenWood project acts as a case study, encouraging a fusion of traditional and advanced fabrication methods to achieve zero waste design.
By integrating digital and traditional craftsmanship, the project repurposes wood waste into new seating elements using a biodegradable wood paste. The parametric model and manufacturing workflow ensure both structural integrity and human comfort. Through this innovative process, a multitude of unique chair designs can be created while embracing a circular design expression of wood, promoting sustainability and reducing waste in the furniture industry.
The project was exhibited at Milan Design Week 2023 and has earned recognition for its sustainability efforts.
