Norwegian designer Lars Beller Fjetland created the innovative Bello! bench in collaboration with Shapes by Hydro, a knowledge hub created by aluminium producer Hydro. Crafted from nearly 90 per cent recycled and 100 per cent recyclable aluminium, the bench highlights the versatility of extruded aluminium. Fjetland aimed to design a robust piece, and aluminium’s durability, especially with an anodized finish, proved ideal. Here is a detailed report on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
Presented at the Material Matters Fair during the London Design Festival, the latest forest green iteration drew inspiration from natural landscapes. Fjetland, inspired by forest scenery, aimed to minimize environmental impact, choosing green for its symbolic and practical significance. The Bello! bench’s distinctive ridged surface, reminiscent of penne rigate pasta, stems from the desire to make extrusions accessible.
Fjetland likens the manufacturing technique to pasta production, where molten metal is extruded through a moulded opening, creating the ridged form. The Bello! bench, suitable for indoor and outdoor use, features a durable finish, making it well-suited for high-traffic areas like public transportation hubs.
