Sustainable Luxury Furniture that Blends Art and Functionality | Hanara-shi series

FDT Bureau

The recent collaboration between renowned Italian furniture brand Paola Lenti and Japanese design firm Nendo, unveiled a mesmerizing collection at the Milan Design Week. The Hanara-shi series of furnishings and complements captivate with their artistic appearance. Drawing inspiration from Japanese culture, particularly the blossoming cherry trees adorning the landscapes of Japan, these pieces also exhibit subtle nods to ancient samurai armor through their intricate fabrics and patterns. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

While the vibrant colours of the Hanara-shi series immediately catch the eye, discerning their actual function may initially pose a challenge. Yet, upon closer examination—whether through photographs or perusing the collection’s website—the breadth of offerings becomes apparent. Suspended lamps, baskets, floor lamps, armchairs and poufs/ottomans comprise this eclectic collection, each crafted from Maris mesh—a recyclable, 100 per cent polypropylene waterproof material.

What sets this collaboration apart is its unconventional approach to design. Rather than starting with a predefined concept, the process began with showcasing the unique Maris mesh fabric, igniting a creative spark that led to the development of these innovative furniture pieces. Leveraging the material’s inherent qualities—rigidity, marbled texture, flexibility and malleability—the designers skillfully folded and wrapped it upon itself to sculpt each item in the Hanara-shi series.

Welded elements serve to assemble the final products, yet it is the fabric itself that truly shines, serving as the cornerstone of this remarkable collection. Moreover, the sustainability ethos extends beyond material selection. Upholstery and inlays utilize recovered cutoffs from previous production processes, underscoring the commitment to minimizing waste and environmental impact.
