Designer Xiang Guan has reimagined the packaging for IKEA’s Hilver table to be more functional than traditional packaging. The innovative design features a pattern that acts as a folding guide, enabling the packaging to transform into a stool that complements the table. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
In the UK, approximately 30.5 million tonnes of household waste are produced annually. Aware of this environmental concern, Guan created FOLD, a packaging solution for IKEA’s Hilver table that promotes upcycling. His design has been recognized with both the Red Dot Award and the Core77 Award for its creativity. Unlike typical upcycled furniture, the FOLD stool boasts a faceted design that enhances aesthetic appeal and breaks up the dullness of plain brown cardboard. The stool is made from the same corrugated board used for the packaging, with the addition of a simple rubber band to secure it. This design not only simplifies assembly but also makes it easy to disassemble and recycle once its usefulness has been fulfilled.
The packaging, crafted from double corrugated cardboard, serves a dual purpose. It can be easily folded into a functional stool and is bound with a rubber band rather than glue, facilitating both assembly and recycling while promoting sustainability.
