Bird Console Table: Where Art Meets Sustainable Craft

Designed by Ritu Kaul of Walnut Interiors, the Bird Console Table brings together nature, art and craftsmanship in a statement piece shaped by an appreciation for artistic detailing and thoughtful material use. Inspired by the harmony between these elements, the handcrafted bird motif symbolises freedom, elegance and movement, giving the console a distinctive visual identity.

The table is handcrafted in premium teak wood with white ash veneer. Its tabletop features hand-painted detailing and gold leafing, while intricate moulding along the top edges adds depth and refinement to the design. Geometric patterns are hand-painted across the surface and finished with a rich PU coating in a matte finish, giving the piece a durable surface while retaining its luxurious character.

Sustainability forms an important part of the console's story. Rather than beginning with entirely new materials, the piece has been reimagined from a 12-year-old furniture item. Through upcycling and contemporary artistry, an existing piece has been given a new identity, demonstrating how furniture can be transformed rather than discarded.

The handcrafted bird further extends this approach. It is created using rice husk, an agricultural waste material that has been transformed into a textured artistic surface. By giving this material a role within the design, the console combines artistic expression with an approach that seeks to reduce waste.

The result is a piece that brings together reclaimed craftsmanship, natural materials and artisanal detailing. The Bird Console Table demonstrates how existing furniture and agricultural waste can be thoughtfully incorporated into contemporary design, creating a statement piece that connects sustainability, innovation and art.
