FDT spoke to design experts to analyse how the introduction of curves is altering our perception of spaces and enhancing their functionality.
The age-old saying ‘form follows function’ has been an ever-present mantra when it comes to furniture and design. However, in recent years, a seismic shift towards softer, more inviting aesthetics has manifested itself in interior design. The hard edges and stark lines of the past have made way for the gentle allure of curved furniture. From plush seating to coffee tables with organic forms, the design landscape is being reshaped to create spaces that embrace comfort and coziness. This transformation goes beyond just aesthetics. It also involves a shift in material preferences, with an emphasis on warmer, more organic choices. So, why has curved furniture become the preferred choice of many? FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT) delves into the factors driving this resurgence.
Furniture design more or less has been majorly confined to straight lines and geometric shapes. Many celebrated spaces abide by this rule but the sensuality of curves is back to entice Much of it has to do with its flexibility and seamless integration in the larger scheme of contemporary interior design which keeps reinventing itself. Today, many may believe that curved furniture design is a recent development; however, the Art Deco era embedded the beauty of curves in the DNA of furniture design a long time ago. Curved designs are no longer confined to upscale living rooms. Its utility has extended to kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms and office spaces too.
As Pritika Singh, Founder, Mohh aptly puts it, “Softer curves have taken the interior industry by storm, and this is visible across interior styles and categories. All subcategories within furniture are incorporating the curved silhouette – most commonly seen in storages with rounded bodies or cutout shapes, seating with plushier edges and forms. Inorganic shapes in home decor and smaller tables along with the rising preference for round, oval or softer elongated coffee tables, dining tables are also a testament to consumers opting for an aesthetic which personifies softness and coziness.”
Beyond aesthetics, curved furniture offers practical benefits. In smaller living spaces, curved furniture can maximize seating while minimizing the feeling of overcrowding. The seamless lines of curved sofas create an inviting focal point in the living room, encouraging people to gather and relax. Moreover, these pieces often eliminate harsh corners, making rooms feel more welcoming and open. The softness of curves also evokes feelings of warmth and comfort, both physically and emotionally. Varun Kant, Country Head, HomesToLife India, HTL Group of Companies highlights the growing emphasis on organic and fluid silhouettes in curved furniture design. “There is a focus on incorporating finer details such as quilting and contrast stitching to enhance the overall aesthetic.”
