Swedish designer Gustaf Westman has teamed up with the hosiery brand Swedish Stockings to develop a unique limited-edition collection of tables crafted from recycled tights. This innovative series, called Tights to Tables, features tables that incorporate between 80 and 350 pairs of recycled nylon tights, depending on their size. According to the team, smaller tables require about 80 pairs, while larger dining tables necessitate a greater number due to their larger dimensions. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
The collection comprises five hand-made tables, all meticulously produced at the Swedish Stockings warehouse in Koping, Sweden. The design process for these tables parallels that of making fibreglass tanks, although the sanding and finishing stages are carried out entirely by hand. The design draws inspiration from natural materials such as stones and marble, reflecting the brand’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Swedish Stockings’ Tights to Tables exemplifies their dedication to preserving the Earth’s finite resources. The brand initiated its Recycling Club in 2016 to address the issue of nylon tights ending up in landfills. This programme allows customers to return old tights from any brand, which are then repurposed into new products. By demonstrating how to recycle textiles effectively, Swedish Stockings aims to extend the lifespan of tights and create durable home furnishings, illustrating a commitment to both sustainability and long-lasting design.
