A combination of two words, paddy and buddy, form the name of this adorable desk lamp by ZM Design Lab. The design aesthetics of Puddy recalls the iconic conical hat that Southeast Asian farmers wear. The 3D printed lamp with natural filaments that are sourced from various types of wood enhances the beauty of the lamp. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
Its minimal body with an adjustable head and a lampshade repaint the picture of rice farmers. The biodegradable lamp is available in four colours – namely Birch, Ebony, Pine and Willow – that are derived from four different types of wood used in the lamp’s design. The lamp’s body is modeled to offer an interactive experience to its user. It also reminds one of Pixar’s Luxo Jr. Puddy is designed to be entirely wireless, which means that one can carry it around and park it conveniently wherever required. The lamp’s head can be easily adjusted as per the user’s need, while its lampshade helps guide the light based on its angle. Face Puddy upward for brighter and intense light, and for more ambient lighting, face Puddy downward.
Out of a 6:4 composite of PLA and recycled wood particles, the lamp is entirely 3D printed. Its light source is encased in an all-PLA component (for translucency and diffusion). The shade, body and the ball socket joint have been printed in the PLA+Wood composite. The unique material palette offers a sandy finish to the lamp, thereby giving it a wood-like smell. Its 2500mAh battery gives up to 7 hours of use on its brightest setting, while the cordless lamp runs a 3000K warm white LED on the inside. Its eclectic design sports a single on/off switch – right below its Micro USB charging point – that doubles as a long-press dimming feature as well.
