Cork Furniture Inspired by Volcanic Rocks | DOL Furniture

FDT Bureau

Furniture design often aims to evoke feelings of warmth, comfort or joy, creating spaces that are inviting and visually appealing. However, some designs lean towards provoking aesthetics, meant more for admiration than everyday use. The DOL furniture collection strikes a balance between these extremes, drawing inspiration from the raw and unpolished volcanic rocks found on Jeju Island, South Korea. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Volcanoes, with their dual nature of magnificence and terror, serve as the foundation for this unique collection. Like the materials repurposed from volcanic eruptions to build resilient structures, DOL furniture transforms cork oak tree bark into pieces that exude a rugged charm. Handcrafted to mimic the uneven texture of volcanic stones, each chair and table in the collection boasts a distinctive character.

Despite its origins in cork, known for its lightweight and insulating properties, the DOL furniture is reinforced with wooden profiles for added stability. Layers of wood oil and wax enhance the cork’s texture, creating a visually intriguing yet soft surface. This choice of material not only provides durability but also aligns with sustainability principles, as cork bark undergoes a renewable process every nine years and is fully recyclable.

DOL furniture collection pays homage to the cyclical journey of volcanic materials, from destructive eruptions to their role in shaping homes and lives, and eventually returning to the earth. It embodies a fusion of nature’s raw beauty with sustainable design principles, offering a unique blend of aesthetics, comfort, and environmental consciousness.
