Triennale Milano and Fondation Cartier jointly hosted a retrospective show of Italian designer Alessandro Mendini at this year’s Milan Design Week. Titled Io Sono Un Drago (I am a dragon), the exhibition, delved into Mendini’s vast contributions across architecture, art, design, and theory. The exhibition, divided into six thematic sections, reflects on Mendini’s life and work, beginning with Identikit, a series of self-portraits. It also explored Atelier Mendini’s architectural projects and Mendini’s research in radical design theory.
Additionally, three immersive installations created by Mendini towards the end of his life, exploring dreamlike themes, were featured. As part of the exhibition, Philippe Starck unveiled What? A homage to Alessandro Mendini, an immersive installation designed to take visitors on a sensory journey through Mendini’s subconscious. Starck described it as a recapture of Mendini’s essence, an osmotic vibration realized in an immersive experience within Mendini’s brain.
Starck’s installation has been housed in Triennale Milano’s Impluvium space.
