Steelcase has once again teamed up with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to introduce two new furniture collections inspired by the legendary architect’s later residential projects. These collections, known as Rockford and Galesburg, are rooted in designs from the extensive archives of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation (FLWF). Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
The Rockford collection draws inspiration from Wright’s work in the Laurent House and his series of Usonian homes in Galesburg, Michigan. It features a variety of pieces including armchairs and a small table with accompanying nesting stools. The armchair, which was originally used in various settings including Wright’s own office, has been adapted from a design made specifically for the Laurent House—a project intended for a veteran with mobility challenges. This adaptation emphasizes Wright’s approach to compassionate design, focusing on usability rather than disability, as described by FLWF President Stuart Graff.
The Rockford armchair is designed with a low, sturdy profile and short arms to facilitate ease of use, while the accompanying small table is crafted from plywood with beveled edges and a triangular top. Although the original designs were crafted from hardwood, Steelcase chose plywood to reflect Wright’s interest in industrial materials and to make the designs more suitable for modern consumer settings.
The Galesburg collection, on the other hand, expands on Wright’s built-in banquet seating from various homes. This collection includes armchairs and a sofa with cantilevered upholstery over a wooden base featuring bullnose edges. The redesign incorporates geometric and single-pane elements reminiscent of Wright’s architectural style. Notably, the new armchairs have been adjusted to feature more substantial arms and welt in the fabric that echo Wright’s architectural motifs. The sofa includes a detachable ottoman that can be positioned to form a chaise lounge, adding versatility to the seating arrangement.
Both collections are reportedly available to the public, featuring a range of textiles provided by Designtex. This collaboration marks the second major project between Steelcase and FLWF, following their successful launch of an office furniture line based on Wright’s design for the SC Johnson Administration Building.
