The Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S) in reply to a written question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Textiles Darshana Jardosh informed that maximum exports of woodware products worth Rs 7,891 crore have been observed in FY22 followed by embroidered and crocheted goods amounting to Rs 5,674 crore, art metal wares worth Rs 4,179 crore, handprinted textiles worth Rs 2,995 crore and more.
Reportedly, the export of handicraft products including via e-commerce platforms increased by 26.2 percent to Rs 32,417 crore in the financial year 2021- 22 from Rs 25,679 crore in the previous financial year. Additionally, a total of 397 domestic and 55 international marketing events had been organized in FY21 and FY22, notifies the minister. Handicraft is one of the important sectors for the government with regard to growth and export. For a country like India, Indian handicrafts are a living heritage and are majorly dominated by female artisans who form over 56 percent of the total artisans. The growth in handicraft exports gain significance as the MSME count in the handicrafts sector also registered growth. Nearly 15.07 lakh Udyamregistered MSMEs out of total Udyam registrations in handloom, handicraft and agro-based production sector and employed 43.15 lakh women employees across India, justifies the data shared by the minister of state for MSME Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma in the parliament. The government, at present, runs the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme to focus on each district as a unit to transform it into a manufacturing and export hub. It identifies products with export potential including handicrafts in the district. In August, the ODOP GeM Bazaar had been launched on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) with more than 200 product categories to promote sales and procurement of ODOP products across the country.
