Tate Modern Furniture Collection Crafted from Fallen Trees | Goldfinger

FDT Bureau

Social enterprise Goldfinger has unveiled its exclusive Tate Modern furniture collection created from fallen trees during the London Design Festival. Originally designed in collaboration with architecture studio Holland Harvey and the Tate Modern for the gallery’s Corner cafe, the collection includes a dining table, bench, and stool crafted from fallen ash trees. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Goldfinger chose to repurpose timber that would otherwise be discarded, showcasing the beauty of native British wood. The pieces feature chunky square legs with rounded corners, referencing the Tate Modern building and Trellick Tower, the location of the Goldfinger workshop. Each item is engraved with the coordinates of the tree’s original location, emphasizing the narrative of its journey.

The ash wood is sourced from Fallen and Felled, a timber company rescuing trees fallen due to disease, weather or urban development, aiming to prevent their destruction and reduce the need to cut down forests. The initiative aligns with Goldfinger’s mission to promote the use of local raw materials and reduce the importation of wood, emphasizing the abundance of resources available in the UK.
