Lamps come in various designs, typically fixed to the ceiling, wall or floor in a single piece. While traditional lamps serve their purpose, there’s potential for innovation in design, installation and maintenance. This new lamp design by Paul Cocksedge simplifies these aspects, creating an illusion of floating in midair, adding an element of magic to any room. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
The lamp separates its two essential components: the light source and the shade. The shade, made from soft yet durable Japanese paper, appears to float, suspended by nearly invisible wires. The actual light source is a small directional spotlight on the floor, shining upward into the shade. This deconstruction allows for easy installation and placement without the need for complex wiring. The shade’s white surface and crumpled texture diffuse the light softly, creating a unique visual appeal even when the lamp is off. Cocksedge’s design not only simplifies the lamp’s structure but also enhances its aesthetic, making it a functional piece of art.
