Heineken is making a significant stride toward sustainability with its innovative Waste-to-Wear initiative, launched alongside the introduction of returnable bottles in South Africa. This groundbreaking project transforms single-use glass bottles into stylish homeware and wearable items, reflecting Heineken’s dedication to reducing waste. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
Typically made from durable glass, Heineken bottles are designed for multiple uses, yet they are often discarded after a single use. The Waste-to-Wear collection leverages the inherent resilience and adaptability of glass by repurposing it into a variety of products. This initiative is an extension of Heineken South Africa’s Fields Green With Grass, Not Glass program, which aims to mitigate environmental impact and enhance urban landscapes by converting broken glass hotspots into green spaces.
In partnership with the creative agency Sonic State, Heineken has transformed collected bottles into a diverse range of items, including 3,000 rings, 3,000 medallions and unique homeware pieces such as dinner sets and a hops-inspired pendant light. Each product is a testament to thoughtful design and environmental stewardship, showcasing the potential of waste to be turned into functional and attractive objects.
The project is part of a broader sustainability and community development effort, which includes introducing returnable bottles and the Green Zones Project. This initiative converts broken glass sites into vibrant green spaces across Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban. These green zones, covering over 5,000 sqm, feature indigenous plants, food gardens and artistic installations, revitalizing urban areas.
The Waste-to-Wear initiative has earned acclaim, with Sonic State reportedly receiving a Bronze award at the New York Festivals Ad Awards 2024 for their role in the project. This recognition highlights the successful collaboration between Heineken South Africa, Sonic State and other industry partners like Swain Swagger, Bhavna Mistry and Juaan Ferreira.
