New York-based design studio Stickbulb has introduced the Treeline lighting series, showcasing fixtures made from wood sourced from trees removed from New York City’s urban areas. Ranging from four to 8ft in length, the wood-panelled fixtures are suspended with wire at both ends. Utilizing pin oak, a prevalent tree in the city, the fixtures are crafted from trees removed in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department and Brooklyn wood supplier Tri-Lox. According to Stickbulb, Treeline aims to establish a new supply chain, transforming urban forest waste into locally made, beautiful products. The initiative seeks to reduce waste and promote salvage practices, emphasizing sustainability and the use of low-carbon materials. Reportedly, New York City removes over 10,000 trees annually, typically resulting in mulching or landfill disposal.
Stickbulb’s approach transforms this discarded wood into high-quality, attractive lighting fixtures, raising awareness about the potential of salvage without overtly emphasizing its reclaimed nature. The studio’s pilot project thus aims to scale up, potentially contributing to a more robust forestry program and fostering a circular economy around wood.
