Local design firm Fefostudio, in collaboration with architect Kamilla Csegzi, has unveiled an innovative large table crafted from mycelium, designed with openings to accommodate custom glassware at the Collectible design fair in New York. Dubbed The Ephemeral Table, this striking creation is composed of a 50 per cent mycelium substrate blended with various organic waste materials such as paper and leaves. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).
The display at Collectible represents the second installment in a series entitled Acts. The initial event was a studio dinner held during NYCxDesign in May, while the Collectible presentation marks the second phase, and the concluding event will be an outdoor dinner. The table, by relinquishing some creative control to nature, becomes a living entity that evolves through three distinct Acts of gathering. Molded from studio-found objects, the table’s voids were utilized to create the amber-coloured glassware featured in the exhibit.
The team aimed to foster a dialogue between materials and the concept of circular production within the design. This interaction acts as a playful exchange between positive and negative, content and container, as well as natural and artificial. Reportedly, at the conclusion of Act III, the table will be left in its final setting, where it will return to nature and disintegrate, completing the project’s circular journey.
