This Lamp is a Bag-Inspired Sculpture that Glows Without Wires | Tote

The Tote light is a striking example of how design can defy expectation and challenge traditional norms. At first glance, it evokes a sense of curiosity, making the viewer wonder how such a visually minimal, elegant structure can function as a light. It’s not just a source of illumination but a seamless integration of form, function and artistic ingenuity. Created by luxury lighting designer Rhea Mehta, the Tote is a sculptural lamp that blends technical precision with a sense of aesthetic. Know more about it on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

The centerpiece of the design of the Tote light is a metal weave tote-shaped structure, resembling like a handbag, housing three blown-glass orbs. These orbs do more than simply emit light; they shape the tote itself. As the orbs shift within the metal mesh, they manipulate the bag’s form, giving it a dynamic and fluid appearance similar to the fabric. This intentional interplay allows no two Tote lights to look exactly the same.

What sets the Tote apart even further is its lack of visible industrial elements. There are no exposed wires, bulbs, or mechanical components to distract from its organic form. The designer worked with artisans in Mumbai to devise a clever concealed cable system, where power is routed through the Tote’s hollow handles, thus invisibly entering the bag and connecting to each orb. The result is a lamp that glows with soft, ambient light, without any visible indication of how it’s powered.

The Tote is supported by a sculptural stand that balances two tote lights on either side, resembling to a weighing scale. A versatile design, the Tote can function as a pedestal, pendant or table light, making it adaptable across various interior settings. With no plastic or low-cost materials, its craftsmanship and materiality radiates luxury.
